Mokomiros

Mokomiro Variations. A view by Tim Scott. In 1989 Francisco and I travelled together to Easter Island (I had gone to Santiago to help him run a steel workshop). Not only did we see and marvel at the famous stone figures and their architectural setting, we also visited the local sculptor Bene Tuky, where — under his bed! — he kept a collection of wooden pieces based on the ancient traditions of Easter Island: not stone, but carved wood, for Easter Island was once covered in forest. Inspired by this tradition and by this man's noble effort to revive it, Francisco has spent the last three decades producing a series ("Mokomiro Variations") offering a new version of this ancient art within his own sculptural ethos of construction in steel and wood. This exhibition shows the fruits of his vision. Tim Scott is one of the United Kingdom's foremost sculptors and was formerly head of the celebrated BA in pure sculpture at St Martins School of Art.
